ViroGates A/S has entered into a long-term research collaboration with the Hvidovre Hospital’s Clinical Research Centre. The agreement will continue to support the commercialization of the company’s suPAR technology.
Since ViroGates’s inception in 2001, which was based on an invention of Jesper Eugen-Olsen, Laboratory Research Director at the Clinical Research Unit at Hvidovre Hospital and part-time CSO of ViroGates A/S, ViroGates and Hvidovre Hospital have had close ties and have over the years collaborated on various studies and projects. This work has in 2006 also led to a new patent application that ViroGates has licensed from Hvidovre Hospital. Now the two organizations have formalized their relationship further into a long-term research agreement to continue to collaborate on clinical work relating to suPAR and its applications.
Proud to be part of the commercialization of research
“The research collaboration with ViroGates is of special importance to us. As scientists, we are proud when our research successfully develops into a commercial product. It is a great reward to see how ViroGates is taking the suPAR technology to the market with the suPARnostic® product,” says Ove Andersen, Research Director, Clinical Research Centre, Hvidovre Hospital. ”The successful commercialization of research always comes back to us and enables us to do what we do best: Invest our time and efforts in important research projects that one day can make a difference in medical practice. We look very much forward to continue our collaboration with ViroGates in the future under this agreement.”
Win-win situation
Betina Macho, CEO, ViroGates: ”We highly appreciate this collaboration with one of Denmark’s most renowned hospitals, which reflects both parties’ strong belief in the suPAR technology and both our commitment to bring this revolutionary health marker to the world and extend and optimize its applications. A collaboration like this is at the heart of successful tech transfer and swift commercialization of hospital research work – and increasing need and demand.”
About the Clinical Research Centre (CRC), Hvidovre Hospital
The research of CRC is focused on developing methods for better diagnostics and treatment of infectious diseases. The researchers, master students, PhD students and post-docs are engineers, biochemists and medical doctors dedicated to change and improve the treatment of patients. Translational science (from idea to product) is a key word for CRC, and the collaborative efforts with ViroGates in the development of the suPARnostic assay is a perfect example thereof.
About ViroGates
ViroGates is an international biotech company headquartered in Copenhagen, Denmark. Originating from its own innovative research, ViroGates develops and distributes prognostic products for infectious disease management with a single goal in mind: To identify risk patients early and improve the lives of seriously infected people globally. The novel ViroGates method to monitor disease progression involves the measurement of a protein found in every individual known as soluble urokinase Plasminogen Activator Receptor (suPAR). High levels of suPAR are indicative of poor patient health or disease outcome. Measuring suPAR serves to evaluate a patient’s progression in many different infectious diseases including HIV, Sepsis and Tuberculosis. The first commercial product based on this technology, suPARnostic®, is a blood-based test kit that provides a simple, cost-effective and highly transportable monitoring tool for suPAR, whose use ensures that the right patients receive the right treatment at the right time. The test kit holds the CE/IVD Mark.
